Can B Vitamins Cause Cancer?

B vitamins are best known as being used for energy boosters. Even though B vitamins do much more than just potentially increase your energy levels. They are most common in B12 shots as well as in energy drinks.

This study was done on B6 and B12. The overall results showed a 30–40% increase in overall risk of lung cancer in men. The greatest risk was found among men with the highest average daily dose of B6 (>20 mg/day was associated with an 82% greater risk) and B12 (>55 mcg/day was associated with a 98% greater risk).

Now, does this mean you should avoid supplementing with B6 or B12 vitamins? No…but, what it does mean is that we need to start paying closer attention to the dosages we take as well as how much of it we get from our food. The study showed that the cancer increasing results were especially in those supplementing with high dosages of either vitamin.

To sum it up, I’m NOT telling anyone to stop supplementing with these two vitamins. What I am saying is that we need to make SURE that you have an actual need for more of either of these two vitamins though tracking food, blood work etc.

Make sure that you aren’t taking too much of either of them for YOU and YOUR specific needs. Because long-term consumption of any supplement can potentially interact with your biochemistry in unexpected ways.
